All relationships are unique, with their own complex challenges. As a relationship evolves it is not uncommon for couples to feel overwhelmed when trying to balance a healthy relationship with everyday life. All relationships face difficulties that are often resolved over time. However, if the unhelpful patterns of communicating, interacting, and behaving becomes entrenched, it may be time to seek professional support through relationship counselling. It is better if possible, to seek relationship counselling before the patterns become entrenched.
Many relationship problems can be resolved through actively participating in relationship counselling. However, many people wait until they feel desperate in their relationship before they seek couples counselling when early intervention with relationship therapy would be beneficial.
If you are able to solve the problems that arise in your relationship by yourselves that is fantastic. However, if you have tried and your attempts have been unsuccessful then engaging in relationship counselling can be of great assistance in moving your relationship forward and freeing yourselves from the confines of the negative patterns that have been formed. In an ideal world, both people in the relationship would be willing to seek assistance through relationships counselling.
Jay generally starts work with a couple in a joint session but may recommend individual sessions as time passes if she feels it would be of benefit to the relationship. This is always a collaborative decision.
One of Jay’s favourite resources that she recommends to couples is ‘Hold Me Tight’ by Dr Sue Johnson.
